Overview of Gene Research
GRIK2, also known as GluR6, encodes an ionotropic glutamate receptor kainate 2. Glutamate receptors are crucial for neurotransmission in the central nervous system, and GRIK2-related kainate receptors play diverse roles in this system [5].
In cancer research, GRIK2-derived antigenic peptides are specifically expressed by bladder cancer stem-like cells (CSCs/CICs), making GRIK2 a potential target for bladder CSC/CIC-targeting immunotherapy [1]. In urothelial carcinoma, GRIK2 has a role in maintaining CSCs/CICs, and higher GRIK2 expression is associated with poorer prognosis [3].
In epilepsy, certain single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in GRIK2, such as rs4840200-T and rs3213607-A, and the interaction between rs4840200 and rs9390754, are related to an increased risk of epilepsy in Chinese children [2]. Also, in bipolar manic patients, the rs2227283 polymorphism of GRIK2 is related to aggressive behaviors, with the A/A genotype and A allele increasing the risk [4].
In conclusion, GRIK2 is an important gene encoding a kainate receptor subunit with a role in neurotransmission. Research on GRIK2 using genetic models has revealed its significance in various disease areas, including cancer, epilepsy, and bipolar mania-related aggressive behaviors. These findings provide potential directions for disease-targeted therapies and further understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms.
