Overview of Gene Research
Ergic3, also known as endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi intermediate compartment 3, is a type II transmembrane protein located in the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi body. It is involved in the ER-to-Golgi transport, especially for gap junction proteins, and may participate in protein kinase-coupled receptors mediated signal transduction pathways [2,3]. Its abnormal expression is related to cancer development, making it a potential biomarker and therapeutic target.
Knockdown of Ergic3 in lung cancer cell lines and in a murine model of lung cancer led to endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced autophagic cell death and suppression of cell growth and tumorigenesis [1,4]. In hepatocellular carcinoma cells, Ergic3 knockdown affected the expression of genes involved in vesicular transport, growth factors, and immune-related pathways [3].
In conclusion, Ergic3 is crucial for the ER-to-Golgi transport of specific proteins. Studies with Ergic3 knockdown models have revealed its significant role in cancer, especially in lung and liver cancers, suggesting that targeting Ergic3 could be a potential strategy for cancer treatment.
